West Mill Wedding Photographer
“Simon was so relaxed and unflappable. As plenty of people surely say, neither of us love having our photo taken, but Simon has a calming approach and doesn’t demand anything of you that you don’t want or aren’t comfortable with. We have beautiful, natural photos that captured the day just as it unfolded. Simon is professional, friendly and so very talented. So many of our friends and family have commented on how wonderful the photos are, with some saying they are the best wedding photos they have seen! Every time we look through our photos we notice little details that we hadn’t before, and each time we are transported back to our wonderful wedding day.”

Wedding Photography at The West Mill, Darley Abbey, Derby
If you’ve booked The West Mill in Darley Abbey, you already know it isn’t your typical “stiff” wedding venue. It has character, history, and a certain raw edge. As a documentary photographer, I find it’s one of the few places where the architecture actually helps tell the story of your day rather than just acting as a backdrop.
1. That “Industrial” Natural Light
The West Mill is famous for its massive, original windows. For a photographer who avoids disruptive flash, this is a dream. Whether you’re on the Cotton Floor for your ceremony or the Spinning Floor for breakfast, the light has a directional, cinematic quality. It creates natural shadows and highlights that allow me to capture the mood of the room exactly as it felt, without blowing out the atmosphere with artificial lights.
2. A Layout Built for “Street-Style” Moments
Because the venue is split across four distinct floors, there is a constant sense of movement and flow. People aren’t just standing in one room all day; they are exploring, laughing on the stairs, and gathering in pockets of light. This “vertical” layout creates endless opportunities for candid, street-style shots—capturing guests in motion rather than lined up for a formal portrait.
3. Textures That Don’t Require Posing
In a white-walled hotel ballroom, you often have to “pose” couples to make the photo interesting. At The West Mill, the exposed brick, blue barrel-vaulted ceilings, and cast-iron beams do the heavy lifting for us. It means we can spend five minutes tucked away in a corner of the Grain Warehouse and get a “wow” shot that feels raw and authentic, without you ever having to look at the camera and “smile on three.”
4. The “No-Nonsense” Vibe
The West Mill attracts a specific kind of couple—people who usually value authenticity over tradition. It’s a venue that feels “perfectly imperfect,” which aligns exactly with my documentary philosophy. It’s about the laughter during the speeches, the quiet nerves before the walk down the aisle, and the chaos of the dance floor—all captured within that stunning, stripped-back industrial frame.
