A Documentary Wedding Photographer in London
“What a wonderful photographer Simon is! We absolutely LOVE the photos he took of our wedding day, he captured the emotion so well! We didn’t even know he was there most of the time he was truly blending into the background and taking his signature documentary style photos. He is a true professional throughout, and I could not recommend him enough. If you want relaxed, natural wedding photographs, Simon is definitely your guy!” – Hannah
Hannah & Alex Chelsea Old Church Wedding
As a Documentary Wedding Photographer I keep finding myself in London. First for my friend Rosie and Robin’s wedding (no longer hosted on this site, but I still think live on Rock’N’Roll Bride) at London Wetlands and Wildlife Trust in Barnes, and again last year for Elizabeth and Richard’s London wedding at St Ermin’s Hotel in Westminster
I have a love / hate relationship with London weddings. Being a Midlands native, trains are limited, especially later in the evening after a wedding traditionally ends. And taking a car into Central London is far too much stress nowadays.
Which means they always turn into a full on adventure and I often end up spending a few days.
Last year I took a long photowalk the evening before the wedding around the South Bank (which is one of my favourite places on earth) taking in the Tate Modern, Royal Festival Hall and London Eye, before having a walk around Westminster.
This year I didn’t want to walk so far, as I usually put in my whole week’s worth of steps when I photograph a wedding day anyway. So I went to The Dennis Morris Music and Life Exhibition at The Photographers Gallery in Soho and mooched around Piccadilly Circus for a bit before returning to an air bnb I’d rented in Chelsea.
The Wedding Day
Let’s get around to talking a bit about the actual wedding, shall we? Alex and Hannah both got ready at The Luxurious Knightsbridge Hotel in Kensington, before we all jumped in Taxis to Chelsea Old Church. After a church ceremony, where we mainly dodged the rain showers, we took a bus ride around London, taking in a lot of the sights around Battersea, The Thames, Kensington and Fulham.
The reception took place upstairs at The Lily Langtry Pub in Fulham. It was a really relaxed and fun celebration – with a wide range of characters and a multinational crowd of guests (Hannah & Alex are currently living in Sweden, with family across Europe). Documentary Wedding Photography is such a great way to capture a day like this, as it was fast moving, unpredictable and full of little stories to capture.
