• Darwin Lake (Matlock): This venue offers a unique “Wedding Village” feel. You can get married by the lakeside or in a woodland glade, and your guests can stay in the 17 stone cottages on-site.

Outdoor Weddings FAQ

Is an outdoor wedding legally binding?

In the UK, a legal civil ceremony must take place under a “fixed, permanent roof” that has been licensed by the local authority. This is why you’ll often see beautiful oak gazebos or summerhouses at outdoor venues—you stand under the structure with the officiant, while your guests sit on the lawn. In the US and Canada, laws are generally more flexible, allowing you to marry anywhere as long as your officiant is registered.

When is the “safest” time to book?

While there is no such thing as a guaranteed dry day, late June through early September is the peak window for outdoor weddings. However, “Shoulder Season” (May and September) often provides the most comfortable temperatures for guests, as mid-July can sometimes be too hot for formal attire.

What should I tell my guests?

Communication is key for guest comfort. Use your wedding website to include a “Dress Code Note” advising on:

• Footwear: Suggest wedges or blocks instead of stilettos to avoid sinking into the grass.

• Layers: Remind them that rural or coastal areas can drop in temperature significantly once the sun sets.

Can everyone hear the ceremony?

Do I really need a “Plan B”?

Yes. Always. Even if you are getting married in a desert, you need a contingency. A great Plan B isn’t just a “backup”—it’s a space you love just as much as the outdoors. This could be a beautiful barn, a high-quality marquee, or a glass-fronted conservatory that still lets the light in.

Is a bright, sunny day actually bad for photos?

Counterintuitively, yes. Midday sun is a photographer’s biggest enemy because it creates high-contrast, harsh shadows and makes guests squint.
