Bride on bus from Arnot Hill Park to Morley Hayes - documentary wedding photography

Documentary Wedding Photographer Leicester

Hello, I'm Simon — a documentary wedding photographer covering Leicester, Leicestershire, and beyond.

Whether you’re getting married in the grandeur of Prestwold Hall, the rustic warmth of Mythe Barn, the woodland magic of Hothorpe, or somewhere gloriously left-field in the heart of Leicester city — I’m here to tell your story without staging a second of it.

No poses. No “look over here.” No awkward instructions about where to put your hands.

Just your day, as it actually happened.

I started photographing weddings in 2010, studied Creative Writing at university (which probably explains a lot), and I’ve spent the years since developing one consistent obsession: capturing how it actually feels to be somewhere, rather than how it looks when everyone’s been tidied up and told to smile.

I use small cameras, move quietly, and try to be the guest at your wedding that nobody notices but everyone’s glad was there.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I love your wedding photos. You've honestly left us with the best gift ever. You capture moments, movements and most importantly, emotions. And then, you wrap them all up into gorgeous photos which tell story after story at every turn.

Simon’s approach is thoughtful, focused on capturing weddings naturally and seeing past the pretty details so your memories will be of the atmosphere, the feelings, the emotions and of course ALL the love.

Leicester: a genuinely great place to get married

Leicestershire is a county of real variety — and I mean that in the best way. You’ve got sweeping countryside estates like Beaumanor Hall and Kilworth House sitting alongside more intimate, character-filled spaces like The City Rooms right in the heart of Leicester. There are converted barns, tipi fields, and manor houses with centuries of stories already baked into the walls.

I love shooting in spaces that have a bit of soul to them. And Leicestershire has plenty.

But wherever you’re getting married — however traditional, however offbeat, however perfectly you — my approach stays the same: be present, be curious, and get out of the way.

Well, I honestly don’t know where to start. Thank you so much for our absolutely incredible wedding photos ♥️ You have, without doubt, captured the essence of our wedding day. We’ve cried & laughed so much this evening. My hearts bursting! I’m so incredibly happy we found you.

Who this works best for

Couples who want to actually be at their wedding, not manage it for the camera.

People who find the idea of three hours of formal group shots slightly horrifying.

Anyone who’s ever looked at a wedding photo and thought: that doesn’t really look like them.

If you’re planning something relaxed, personal, and a little bit you — whether that’s a laid-back afternoon at Shearsby Bath, an inclusive celebration at a Leicester city venue, or something entirely your own invention — I’d love to hear about it.

Do I have to have ‘wedding preparation/getting ready’ photography?

We certainly don’t need to take a load of photographs of makeup being applied if that’s what you’re worried about. But the morning of the wedding can be a wonderfully chaotic couple of hours where emotions are running high, and feelings are apparent. It makes for some fantastic relationship-focused photography!

Do you do Wedding Albums?

Yes – I use Folio Albums. They are beautifully crafted, locally and sustainably produced, and the people who work there are fantastic. You can read more about wedding photo albums here.

Portraits without the fuss

I know portraits are probably the bit you’re least looking forward to. Most people feel that way.

Here’s what I do: I keep them short. We’ll take a walk — usually around golden hour if the timing works out — spend some time together, create some images that actually look like the two of you, and get you back to your guests quickly. No posing, no “chin down slightly,” no standing awkwardly under a tree while I shout encouragement from fifteen feet away.

What I’m after is a portrait that captures something true about your relationship. Whether that’s giddy and excitable, quiet and tender, or completely ridiculous — bring all of it.

Do we get all the wedding photos?

You get all the good ones! I take far more than I need to so that I can send the absolute best ones to you. The odd dud photo is a natural part of the process and one that you probably wouldn’t appreciate viewing!
For a full day’s wedding, I usually deliver a minimum of 400 photos.

What have documentary, reportage, and photojournalism got to do with wedding photography?

Documentary wedding photography, reportage, and photojournalism are just different words for the same thing. They’re fancy ways of saying I’ll photograph the day without trying to control it or affect the natural proceedings.

How long do we have to wait until we see our photographs?

Your wedding photographs are usually ready about a month after the wedding

How do we book you?

We’ll schedule a chat (or a meeting if you’re local to Nottingham / Derby) about your wedding.
To begin with, I like understanding what you want from your day and your wedding photography.
If we get on and you’re happy with my approach to wedding photography, I’ll send out a booking form and contract and ask for a 25% deposit to secure your wedding date.
