Bride and groom walk back down the aisle at Pickfords House Museum

Derby Museum Weddings

An interesting development over the past couple of years has been the introduction of weddings across Derby’s Museums and Galleries.

Derby Museums have started offering weddings at three locations – Pickford’s House, The Silk Mill and Derby Museum and Art Gallery. All three offer completely unique and interesting places to get married

I’ve currently shot small weddings at two out of three. So it feels like Monopoly – I’m still trying to land one at the Silk Mill. Hopefully by the time you’re reading this that will no longer be true!

Derby Museum and Art Gallery

Derby Museum and Art Gallery

“Derby’s former Central Library building was designed in 1876 in Flemish Gothic style. Its striking arched entrance, beautiful glass atrium and ornate mezzanine balcony, full of curiosities, make this Grade II Listed building a stylish and unusual venue for your wedding, located in the very heart of the city.” – Derby Museum and Art Gallery Website

I’ve always loved this building…. partially because I love a good library, and this was one of my favourite haunts. But also because it’s one of the most stunning buildings in Derby City centre. Inside it houses a stunning low lit gallery and I believe ceremonies also happen in the museum.

It’s very dark, and you can’t use flash. But I have some very fast lenses for exactly this purpose.

Dannielle and Matthew got married at the peak of the covid pandemic – so were allowed up to 15 guests, and as you can see, we were all still in masks. You can see more pictures from this wedding in my post on small and intimate weddings

Pickford’s House Museum

“Architect Joseph Pickford’s Grade I Listed 18th Century town house is a celebration of Georgian living, complete with stunning furniture and fittings. The beautiful gardens provide an ideal backdrop for wedding drinks and photographs, and the property makes a charming location for more intimate gatherings. The Great Dining Room offers a special fine dining experience, while the Top Gallery provides space for a more informal wedding buffet.” – Derby Museums Website

Pickford’s house is another beautiful building. (Although after having to drag my seven year old there for a pre-wedding meet with the staff, my seven year old always begs me not to take him back to ‘The smelly house with the fake food’) Hannah and Ben got married there in a relaxed and informal ceremony this Summer.

The staff even gave a guided tour before the meal!

The Museum of Making / Derby Silk Mill

“Celebrating the area’s rich history of innovation, the Museum of Making in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site is a contemporary space telling Derby’s 300-year history of making to inspire new creativity on what is widely regarded as the site of the world’s first factory.”

The Museum of Making, or The Silk Mill Is another beautifully quirky venue for a city centre wedding. In the foyer you can marry below an expoloded Toyota, a Rolls Royce jet engine – and the industrial building is a wonderful venue for a wedding breakfast.
