Family Photographer Derbyshire

Your either here because you’ve heard about my brand of Documentary Family Photography and are excited to get booked in. Or you’ve ended up here whilst googling Derbyshire Family Photographers and are interested in this alternative approach and want to find out more.

Either way – welcome to my chaotic world of unposed family photography.

My belief is that those real, unposed moments are where the true magic lies in family photography. So there’s no forced poses or smiles – in fact, I’m very keen to capture the the real laughter and smiles that come from sharing life with your loved ones.

Family Photo Sessions can take place at home, down the park or anywhere that’s special to you and your family. Playing cards, bouncing on the bed or paddling in the sea. How do you enjoy spending time together?

Simon captured some wonderful family photos for us during an Autumn day in Markeaton park. We hardly noticed he was there while we entertained our 2 year-old by throwing leaves and climbing on logs, so we were amazed that he managed to capture so many beautiful shots.

We chose Simon to photograph our children because we wanted to capture a moment in their young lives but not in the traditional studio-style posed portrait. Simon worked with us at home just observing the children at play and they were totally relaxed with him. As a result he managed to capture their spirit, their sense of wonder, the magical in the mundane and the normal chaos of family life. It is those moments that we will want to look back on in years to come and we are so grateful to Simon for his professionalism, his friendliness, and his special talent for spotting something extraordinary in the ordinary workings of everyday family life.

How would you describe your photography style?

I shoot in a very relaxed and natural style. It’s often referred to as photojournalism, documentary or reportage. It doesn’t involve posing and it relies on letting you and your family be yourselves.

Should we bring anything?

Anything your family enjoy doing together is really helpful. Flying a kite, playing a ball game…. with older families we’ve even played card games for the photo session.

What happens if it rains?

We can either reschedule before the session – move the session indoors or put coats and wellies on and go and splash in some muddy puddles.

Do you charge for travel?

I don’t charge for the first 15 miles (so if you live within 15 miles of Derby travel is included) – after that it is £1 per mile.

Do you offer Gift Vouchers / Certificates?

Yes – please get in touch and let me know what you’d like (they can be for photoshoots or physical products such as prints or albums) – and I’ll make some up for you.

Where do the photos take place?

Family photography can take place in a family home, in a forest, down the park… anywhere you feel at home with your family.

In Derbyshire we’re wonderfully placed for the Peak District, Dovedale, Buxton & Sherwood Forest and Derby has several wonderful parks.

What should we wear?

My priority is that you feel relaxed and comfortable for your photos – so what you feel comfortable in is the best advice I can give! After that, try to avoid large logos / text and bold patterns…. although all these rules are there to be broken!

How many people is the family photoshoot for?

The family photoshoot is for up to 5 family members – with a £30 surcharge for each additional participant.

How do we view the photos?

You have a digital gallery where you can download your images and order lab prints.

How do we book?

Please get in touch using the form on this page and tell me about your family and requirements and we’ll get the ball rolling.

Why choose a documentary family photographer?

  • To capture family life in a candid way
  • To create authentic storytelling images that capture life as it really is
  • To capture the real connections and emotions between you and your family
  • No forced posing (or forced anything really)
