Candid Wedding Photography

Over the last decade of photographing weddings, I've always taken the approach of a candid wedding photographer.

I think there are two factors which always draw me back to candid wedding photography.

The first is that I really do believe it’s the best way to tell the story of the day. I don’t think memories are going to be brought back by being put in the fashionable poses and clinches of the day, or lined up in groups.

And that brings us to the second reason:

Your wedding day is not a photoshoot. It flies by so fast and I want you to live and experience that in all its glory.

Every second, if possible. I want to show you how it felt to be there on the day.  Using verbs and adjectives and emotions  – not just the nouns.

If you want candid wedding photography for your day, get in touch.

What is candid photography?

Candid photography is a style of photography that captures moments spontaneously, without the subjects being aware of the camera. It aims to capture genuine emotions, expressions, and interactions in a natural and unposed manner. Unlike traditional posed photography, where subjects are often instructed to smile or pose a certain way, candid photography focuses on capturing the authenticity and raw emotions of a moment.

How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer?

As soon as possible – I often have people booking a couple of years in advance, so if you want to secure your chosen photographer, it’s best to do it as soon as you have your venue booked.

How many photos can we expect to receive from our wedding?

The number of photos you receive depends on various factors such as the length of coverage, the size of your wedding, and the events taking place. There’s more of a breakdown on the pricing page.

How soon after the wedding will we receive our photos?

You can expect to receive your fully edited photos within 4-6 weeks of your micro wedding. We strive to deliver your images promptly while ensuring each one has that special magic that you see across the weddings on my blog.

Do you take formal portraits / group photos?

Yes, even though I’m all about the candid photography – about half of my couples ask for group shots at their wedding. I like to do this quickly and efficiently so that it’s not too distracting from your wedding day,  so I ask couples to pick a maximum of 10 combinations where possible. It also helps to rope in someone loud and bossy to gather the relevant people for each photo!

Do you offer engagement sessions as part of the wedding package?

Yes, engagement sessions can be added to your wedding package for an additional fee. Engagement sessions are a great way for us to get to know each other and capture some beautiful images before your big day.

Do you travel for weddings?

Although most weddings I shoot are around Derbyshire and the Midlands, I love to go on a wedding adventure. I charge for travel expenses as needed. But if your venue is less than an hour drive from Derby, it’s considered local!

How do we book?

As with  all my couples – I like to get to know about you and what you want from your photography first. So drop me an enquiry and we’ll meet for coffee, jump on the phone, and start getting a plan together for your (little) big day

Choosing Simon as our wedding photographer was one of the best decisions we made. We were drawn to his documentary style as neither of us are particular fans of posing for photos!

On the day Simon really took his time to understand the venue and where he would look for us to have photos throughout the day. We have no idea how he did it, but he managed to be in all the right places at the right time and (in the best way possible) we didn’t notice at all!

We have ended up with the most incredible wedding photos, they have captured all emotions of the day and when we look at them we are transported back to exactly how we felt. We truly couldn’t be happier with our photos and can’t thank Simon enough for capturing our memories so perfectly.
